City of Maitland is Hiring a FIREFIGHTER/EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN Near Maitland, FL

This is a highly technical and responsible position that requires a great deal of initiative and ability to perform specialized work. This position involves unusual and difficult work at a subordinate level. This position is located in the Fire Operations section of the Maitland Fire Rescue Department. Members of the classification will perform individually or as a member of a firefighting team and will participate in Fire Operations and Public Service. Works under the general supervision of the Fire Chief or assigned designee.
This position is considered an emergency/disaster position. During emergency conditions, all City employees are automatically considered emergency service workers. City employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation, which requires that the employee be ready, willing, and able to report to work during emergencies and/or disasters of any kind, notwithstanding any other commitments the employee may have and be able perform emergency services duties, as assigned.Work primarily involves the protection of life and property, and frequently demands strenuous exertion under dangerous conditions where personal injury could occur, such as: fire, smoke, extreme heat and cold, heights, cramped spaces, toxic or irritant gases or chemicals, explosive situations, falling debris, water rescue, and exposure to communicable diseases.
Connects hoses or apparatus to hydrants and to pumps, joins hose sections, connects nozzles, and operates nozzles during fire extinguishment. Enters and ventilates burning structures. Raises, climbs and lowers ladders. Performs salvage and overhaul operations.
Conducts pre-fire planning and physically surveys of the interior and exterior of commercial buildings. Removes entrapped persons from vehicles and building structures.
Applies basic life support and assists in applying advanced life support procedures to individuals needing emergency medical care.
Conducts hazardous materials mitigation activities. Performs water rescues utilizing surface rescue techniques. Maintains knowledge of patient transport procedures.
Operates fire and rescue apparatus.
Maintains knowledge of area hospitals and direct transport routes.
Exhibits safe working habits and driving practices. Maintains knowledge of City buildings and streets. Prepares and enters work related reports.
Provides routine “vital signs” check for the public.
Assumes and carries out duties and functions of a relief driver or engineer, as required. Tests and maintains hydrants, hoses, vehicles, and auxiliary equipment.
Participates and engages in non-emergency company programs such as: pre-fire planning, public education, and fire prevention.
Assumes and carries out the duties and functions of a relief driver after completing a department sanctioned Pump Operator/Relief Driver course and an in-house evaluation of skills.
Secures and maintains departmental issued equipment and clothing on a continuous basis.
Safely uses and operates all fire equipment, tools, and other items as necessary including the proper use and wearing of safety clothing, accessories, and self-contained breathing apparatus at emergency scenes.
Maintains certification and performs Emergency Medical Services and Rescue Services as called upon by the public and prescribed by the City Medical Director.
Transports medical and trauma patients safely to area hospitals and/or provides indicated care.
Ensures readiness of assigned vehicle and equipment.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Deals courteously and firmly with the public to establish and maintain good public relations. Maintains a safety conscious attitude and projects this to fellow employees.
Participates in classroom and drill ground training exercises. Maintains cleanliness of station.
May assume lead role with special projects within the Department such as, but not limited to, uniform purchasing, bunker gear coordination, station supply acquisition, hydrant servicing, etc.
Performs other duties as assigned.Members of this classification must have considerable working knowledge of fire prevention, fire suppression, emergency medical practices, hazardous materials mitigation, victim rescue practices, municipal streets to include overall geography and properties, working knowledge of Water distribution, working knowledge and familiarity of the fire protection and extinguishing system, departmental policies and procedures and vehicle stabilization and extrication techniques.
This position requires a continuous verification of knowledge and skills required for effective work performance through classroom and drill ground training exercises.
Remains calm in tense situations.
Maintains physical fitness level as defined by department program.
Maintains knowledge of Maitland Fire Department Rules and Regulations, and Standard Operating Procedures.Must possess High School Diploma or equivalent as recognized by the State of Florida Department of Education.
Must hold current certification and licensing as an EMT in accordance with the State of Florida, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, Florida Administrative Code 64J-1.008.
Must possess and maintain a certificate Florida State Minimum Standards Certification as a Firefighter in accordance to F.S. 633.412.
Must possess and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License in the capacity required by law for operators of emergency vehicles.
Must possess, or obtain shortly after being hired, a certificate of successful completion in an Emergency Vehicle Operator’s Course (EVOC) or equivalent.
Employees in this position are required to pass the National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-700 within 30 days of employment; ICS-100 and ICS-200 within 90 days of employment, or from the date of taking the position. There may be additional NIMS required, which will be scheduled by your supervisor.
Must meet all pre-employment requirements in accordance with state and department standards.
Note: The classification of Firefighter/EMT is required to become a State of Florida certified Paramedic.
